Challenge

Many people are conscious of what they eat – both from a health and environmental perspective. But what is the impact of this? 

Food and climate change are connected in complicated ways. The global food industry requires an enormous amount of energy to cultivate, transport, store, prepare, and serve food. The food (that we both eat and throw away) accounts for about 25% of the average Swedish climate impact. But not all foods are transported, stored etc. in the same way. Some foods have a really big impact on the environment and others don’t and it is possible to develop a diet that is more eco-friendly. How could this information about the food become more available for us and help us to change our food behaviour to develop an eco-friendly diet?

Concept

Food Tracker is a service that can be used as an application at the phone or for example in the Ica self scanners. The main task of Food Tracker is to help the customer make quick and smart choices in the grocery store and by that streamline the shopping experience and create a deeper environmental awareness. The user can scan an item with Food tracker to get information about the product. The information is a total estimate of percentage points on how good the product is for health, the environment and for the user’s special needs.

In long term, the goal of Food tracker is to create healthy and environmentally friendly habits, by knowledge and awareness, when buying food.

Where does our food come from


Beef from Brazil, avocados from Mexico, wines from South Africa and green beans from Kenya – our food shopping lists consists of products from the whole world. The influence of the global trade of food on local diets and cultural choices has exploded over recent years, which has turned into a huge problem for our planet.

The color choice and design of inactive and active buttons. The blue color indicates an active button and the red color indicates that something is bad and should be noticed.

1.Scanning

By scanning a product in the Food Tracker app the user can get simple and clear information about the product.


It’s also possible to scan the receipt if needed.

2.Get information

This information is shown after scanning a product. In this example the Red lenses fits the user very well. The system summarizes the product (in this case to 85% on the good scale), by counting how good the product is in all categories.

The products that fits the user the best could be saved to the “smart choice” folder.

3.warning

If scanning a product which the user is allergic to the information interface will show that in a warning color. This would only happen if the user did choose an allergy when setting up the profile.

4. Enivronment awareness

If the user wants to check why the Red lenses didn’t have a full circle (100%) in the environment category it’s possible to click on the Environment to see more.

The diagram circles show how good or bad the product is for the environment with a total impact at the top, which is based on 3 under categories at the bottom. The worse the more red color. The darker blue is okay and the light blue is good.

This information gives the user clear information about the product which makes the choice, to buy it or not, easier.

5. based on Profile

How good the product is for the user is based on the users profile, which also can be updated by time.

If the user is buyng food for the whole family it’s possible to use the family slide in the profile.

1. Inspiration

The user can get inspiration on environment friendly and season based recipies and add ingredients to the shopping list in Food Tracker.

The smart shopping list is based on the chosen recipies and other ingredients can easily be added.

3. Scanning product

When it’s hard to know what product to buy, the product can be scanned with Food Tracker to get information about the product and/or compare it with other products to see which one the fits the best for the user.

4. Information

By scanning a product the user gets essential information of the product to easily decide if buying it or not.

 

Learning outcome:

  • Service design - this was my first service design project and I had to learn about how to design a service

  • Interaction design - as I mainly worked with that and made a mobile application I improved my skills in designing interfaces

  • Experience design - improved skills by focusing on how to create a new food shopping experience

  • Learned the program Sketch
